A motor scooter, sometimes referred to as a sport scooter, is a vehicle that operates on two wheels. With its step-through frame, it allows its rider to straddle the seat in the manner of a bicycle. The motor scooter is engine-powered, with the engine usually attached to either the rear axle or fixed under the seat of the vehicle.

The wheel diameter of motor scooter is generally from 20-36 cm, making the motor scooter the transportation method of choice in the urban areas because of the low maintenance costs and steering ease. Compared with a motorcycle, a motor scooter is quieter, carry fewer legal restrictions, and requires relatively less skill to ride.

The first motor scooters were manufactured by Cushman, in order to aid World War II (WWII) paratroopers in navigating the rugged terrain. The compact and light nature of these vehicles was later adapted by the Italian manufacturer Piaggo as the Vespa, becoming an inexpensive form of transportation in the bustling city. The Vespa dominated the motor scooter market for many years, until the 1980s when Asian markets began releasing similar scooter models. They are now very popular in Asia and many parts of Latin America.

Similar to most motor vehicles, the motor scooter is subject to the strict emissions standards in the some countries. For example, both the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have issued restrictions on the emissions allowance in the USA. To better accommodate these guidelines, more and more motor scooter manufacturers have turned to fueling their vehicles with LPG instead of gasoline or diesel.

Modern motor scooters on the higher end of the price range boast technological, comfort, and aesthetic additions. For example, frames have become stronger, and engines have become more efficient. To increase the passenger's comfort, windshields have been found on newer scooter models.
